Gambrel Roof

A gambrel roof has a pair of slopes on two sides of a structure. The upper slope is fairly low while the lower pitch has a steep slope. This has similar benefits to the mansard roof style, as it effectively maximizes the head room on the upper level of the building.

The gambrel roof style is very popular on barns where the upper level of the barn is used as a hay loft. The gambrel allows for more hay storage than would most other roof styles. However a gambrel roof is not only for the farm, rather it can be a very appealing style on a home.
